The Montrealer, April 1969

20.01.2015

Here is an issue of The Montrealer, one of those now all-but-extinct local general interest magazines (think Toronto Life or New York Magazine) that is more of a visual and archetypal artefact of late 60s Montreal, much more style and fluff than substance but still indicative of what was perceived as what the mainstream Anglophone population wanted to read about that month. A reference to the 1969 Computer Riots (as the “Sir George Affair”) contrasts starkly with the Sir George University (now Concordia) student newspaper The Georgian posted elsewhere on this site.

    Hello,
I read with interest about The Montrealer archival project. Many photographs were taken by my father James Gordon MacCormack ( known as Gordon) for The Montrealer. His main interest was The St. Margaret's Ski Club in the 1930's. I believe he also covered fashion shows and St. Andrews Ball.
Some of his works are in the National Archives "Knights with Wings" and also the Ski Museum.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Regards.

Thanks for the interest! We posted more images of Montrealer covers through the years on our main website here, https://www.arcmtl.org/en/images/the-montrealer/ . There is a recent, unrelated art project in Montreal where comic book artists and illustrators created covers for imaginary issues of "The Montrealer", they were not aware of the original Montrealer magazine until after they started their project. An exhibit of their recent fictional Montrealer covers just opened in Lachine, I belive, this June 2018. Thanks for the interest, do contact us if you have any questions, you can click on Contact above in the menu.
